Gustavo III and Una vendetta in Domino were the two titles given this opera for the three years it remained in the offices of the Neapolitan censors. In 1859, the title became Un ballo in maschera (A Masked Ball). The previous year, bombs were thrown by three Italian nationalists while Emperor Napoleon III was on the way to a performance of Rossini’s Guillaume Tell. This certainly influenced the severity of the censors who were reluctant to allow the staging of the assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden, as narrated in Verdi’s libretto. The result is a musical score of contrasts which, while maintaining the immediacy of the masterpieces of the composer’s middle period, goes further by exploring dramatic and musical registers which we encounter fully developed in his later works. The production which opens the season is by Gianmaria Aliverta from the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, it maintains the North American setting chosen by Verdi’s librettist as a solution to the vicissitudes imposed by strict censorship. Yet, far from adhering to it, the action is moved forward to the era of Abraham Lincoln, thereby focussing on the racial tensions and political idealism of this convulsive period.
